Yes, the old Aggie joke about the biology experiment:
Aggie grad-student says "Jump, frog, jump!" and applies a hot needle to the frog's rump. The from jumps.
Aggie amputates one frog leg, says "Jump, frog, jump!" and applies a hot needle to the frog's rump. The frog jumps, sort of.
...............another leg,................. The frog almost jumps.
...............another leg,................. The frog wiggles a little.
...............the last leg,................ The frog doesn't move.
Aggie writes in lab notebook, "Conclusion: Amputating a frog's legs makes it deaf."

Linda,

I AM in Texas (Wise county). I expect to see you some time this summer.

Wot's the old joke. A priest rear ends a Jewish rabbi. They chat and decide to call the cops for an accident report. Officer O'Reilly responds, looks at the accident, then addresses the priest:

Father, just how fast was this guy going when he backed into you?

For wot it's werth, stereo-types DO have some basis in fact, else they would not have have ever evolved. The problem occurs when you use the stereo-type to describe ALL of the group depicted.

always,

Tony, my dear, it is always a joy to see a new article by you, and I hope you get to Texas some day and visit us. We've got a rather large cow college handy with loads of pretty coeds and lots of ladies' rooms. I've been in South Ca'lina for the past couple of weeks and learned a lot of great "Polack" jokes (as we refer to all ethnic jokes around here.) I can't tell in public. Ethnic jokes always say more about those who think they are funny than they do about the supposed butt of the jokes. Here's an old favorite: the local sheriff is called out because a _____ has been found dead wrapped in chains in a local swamp/swimming pool/river/stream. He scratches his head and says, "Isn't that just like a ______ to steal more chain than he can carry off?!" That's a great "racial" joke, but what it is making fun of is blind prejudice. I told it to a friend of the ethnicity involved in the original and he laughed his head off. Here's another. X is involved in a car accident and injures three members of the Y group. The local law investigates and pulls out his ticket pad, citing the Y with his head through the windshield for "breaking and entering," the one flung in the ditch for "leaving the scene of an accident," and the third for jay-walking, obstructing the road, impeding traffic, or littering, whatever. Again, this is a joke about blind prejudice and willful refusal to see facts and truth. Here is a true tale from ultra-liberal Seattle. When a fracus involves a black the officer writing up the report refers to him as a "Canadian!" We all have our flaws but should not be blamed for our skin color or religion unless those were the direct cause of behavior, as in the obvious case of multi-murderer Nidal Hassan. I want reparations, too! My people immigrated (legally) to this country before the period when signs said "Irishman need not apply" for jobs and "Dogs and Irish keep off the grass." We conservatives are the ones who judge others on their characters and cultural beliefs (such as good manners and tolerence of others.)

Old man River

1. Of course they believe what they are saying--or they are lying.

2. I think the term is "projection", where we "project" the way we would act upon others. What other frame of reference do we have?

Furthermore, if WE would act a certain way and THEY would NOT act that way then obviously, THEY are "wrong".

3. Hence, if WE are "liars", then we assume others also lie. I'm watching FOX where Juan Williams is trying to justify bribing Sestak by quoting deals Kennedy, Eisenhower, and Regan made. (In point of fact, those deals were made before they were elected officials and came under the Hatch Act.) See, they all do it. We act that way, so THEY will act that way. I'll lie to you BEFORE you lie to ME.

I think every human being views life through their own set of glasses. Its why there are difference's of opinion. Everyone has had a unique experience and its very difficult to duplicate in another person. While it may seem crazy that someone would come up with a completely different conclusion about something that what you do. They are thinking the exact same thing about you. Facts are facts but they can be interpreted many different ways. I have a guy I work with that assumes anytime something goes wrong it is the fault of some person. He cannot get it through his head that things just break sometimes. He is always on the warpath to find a culprit. He wants someone punished for everything that goes wrong. In his eyes people are maliciously doing things all the time. You cannot get him to see it any other way. Hes right, a lot of problems are caused by operator error, but he sees it as malicious. That is how his glasses are colored. We all tend to think that our view is the correct one. I know at least in my own case that is not always right. We should all question how we see things constantly. Take a look at things from another persons perspective. You will soon realize that they probably do believe the things they are saying.

Desert rat,

Many folks are quite single minded in terms of their life's beliefs. Hence, a black leader sees everything in terms of "civil rights" and how it affects the "movement"; La Raza sees everything in terms of how it affects THEIR "movement"; women's groups, same thing. Wot's the old saw??

"If your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."

For many lefties, politics is their stick. They see everything through to prism of "politics" and how it affects THEIR goals. If you go back to my missive of "What is a Liberal", you might note that I said, "They stick together." Hence, although every terrorist has an "Arab" name, since the head man won't acknowledge this pattern, THEY ALL refuse to acknowledge it.

Hence, even though "facts" may be admitted, those facts will be warped to fit the preconceived notions. I believe the term is "cognitive dissonance".

Steve,

I think that's the nicest way I've been called crazy in my life. I like to think I'm a recovering bureaucrat, a retired teacher, and a practicing eccentric.

What I've observed about the Left is that if somebody from the political center or right makes an erroneous statement of whatever sort, that person is accused of wilfully mistating the facts: Lying. That the person making the erroneous statement believed what he was saying is irrelevant to the accusation.

As to statements by many on the Left, I have great difficulty in believing that they actually do believe what they are saying. It has more to do with what I see as irrational thought, however, than wilful mistatement. Denial of fact is part of the problem, quite often.

Some decades back I'd get into arguments with Molly Ivins. I still think of her as one of the better investigative jounalists running loose in Austin, in those days. But while we often agreed about the facts of some political matter, her conclusions as to meaning quite often left me seriously drop-jawed in disbelief. While I've never met them, seeing James Carville and Rahm Emanuel on TV leaves me with the same feelings of disbelief.
